Picture this: You’ve poured your heart and soul into writing your manuscript, carefully polished your query letter, and you’re ready to embark on the exciting yet nerve-wracking journey of querying agents. But wait, before you hit that send button, have you considered the power of building a query support network?
So, let’s look at how to create a strong support network to help you survive the query trenches. Trust me, having a squad of supportive writers by your side can make all the difference.
The Power of Author Connections
Let’s start by acknowledging the incredible value of connecting with fellow authors during the querying process. Writing can often feel like a solitary endeavor, but when it comes to querying, the power of community shines through.
By building connections with other writers, you gain access to a network of mutual support, shared experiences, and camaraderie. They understand the rollercoaster of emotions that come with querying, from the nail-biting anticipation to the soul-crushing rejections. With author connections, you’re never alone on this wild ride.
The Benefits of Joining Query Critique Groups
One of the best ways to build your query support network is by participating in query critique groups. These groups consist of writers who exchange feedback and provide invaluable insights into each other’s query letters. Consider joining both general critique groups and more specialized ones tailored to your genre or specific query elements. For example, if you’re querying a YA Fantasy, finding a critique group with authors also querying YA Fantasy can provide targeted feedback.
Let’s not forget the success stories that have emerged from critique groups. Take me, for example. I’ve been through the querying process many times and will probably have to go through it again. It’s tough each time. But I have found working with other writers who are in the same spot to be so helpful. I am in several Discord groups, many of which I found through connecting with other authors on Twitter or through writing workshops I’ve been to, like Futurescapes and Writing with the Soul. Each of these groups has dedicated channels to those who are querying, and it is so helpful to get feedback and commiserate with other authors who are in the same place I am.
Collaborative Query Brainstorming Sessions
Imagine sitting around a virtual campfire with your writer friends, bouncing ideas off each other, and refining your query to perfection. Collaborative query brainstorming sessions are an excellent way to leverage the collective wisdom and creativity of your fellow authors. Share your query drafts, ask for input, and be open to constructive feedback. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh perspective or a brilliant suggestion from a fellow writer to turn a good query into an outstanding one.
Remember, building a query support network is not just about receiving assistance; it’s about giving back too. When you participate in brainstorming sessions, offer your insights and suggestions to fellow authors. The more you contribute to the growth of others, the stronger and more supportive your network will become. You can do this through the writing groups you’ve joined, or put a call out on social media and see what happens!
Accountability Partnerships and Check-Ins
Navigating the querying process can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to lose motivation along the way. That’s where accountability partnerships and check-ins come in. Find a fellow writer who is also querying and team up to provide each other with regular check-ins, virtual write-ins, or goal-setting sessions. These partnerships create a sense of responsibility and encouragement, helping you stay focused and motivated throughout the querying journey.
My CP (Critique Partners) and I are always checking in with each other to see how we’re doing. That extra nudge from my friends has helped me meet goals more than once. Whether you set a regular schedule or just check in from time to time, it’s important to find what works for you and your accountability partners.
Celebrating Query Milestones Together
While the querying process can be tough, it’s essential to celebrate the milestones along the way. A query support network is there to cheer you on and lift your spirits when you receive that personalized rejection or, better yet, when you get a full request from an agent. Consider organizing virtual celebrations, themed parties, or even supportive shout-outs on social media.
By celebrating together, you reinforce the notion that every step forward is worth acknowledging and that you’re not alone in this journey.
How to Find Your Query Support Network
Now, you may be thinking “But Taylor, how do I find support groups?” I can help with that. I mentioned earlier that many of my groups I found through workshops. I attended a workshop with Suzie Townsend, and there was a critique partner dating spreadsheet floating around. From that spreadsheet, I found my number one writing friend (and, let’s be honest, real friend). But, there are other ways to find friends if a workshop isn’t an option.
Hosting Query Swap Events
Why not take the initiative and organize your own query swap events or workshops? These events bring together authors who exchange queries, offer feedback, and provide diverse perspectives. By participating in query swaps, you not only receive valuable insights on your own query but also contribute to the growth of other writers.
Create a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their work and providing constructive criticism. Together, you can elevate each other’s queries and increase your chances of success.
Utilizing Social Media Networks
In today’s digital age, social media platforms offer incredible opportunities to connect with fellow authors for query support. Twitter, for instance, hosts pitch parties and query critique threads where writers share their queries and receive feedback from the writing community. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram also have dedicated writing groups and communities where you can engage in discussions, ask for advice, and find fellow authors on the querying journey.
Remember, building your query support network on social media goes beyond seeking assistance. Engage with other authors, celebrate their milestones, and offer words of encouragement. By fostering a culture of support, you create a positive and uplifting community where writers can thrive together.
Into the Trenches
By joining critique groups, engaging in collaborative brainstorming sessions, organizing query swap events, and utilizing social media networks, authors can receive valuable feedback, encouragement, and celebrate milestones together.
Through a supportive community, authors can navigate the querying journey with increased resilience, motivation, and ultimately, greater chances of success. Writing, and querying, doesn’t have to be a solitary experience. In my opinion, it’s better with friends.
So, don’t be afraid to step out of your writing cave and connect with fellow authors. Together, you can conquer the querying process and transform it from a daunting challenge into an exciting adventure. Happy querying!
